‘Tis a Fearful Thing by Yehuda HaLevi
Interest in this particular poem has been revived since quoted in the final episode of the Netflix series, Godless, written and directed by Scott Frank.
Yehuda HaLevi is a twelfth-century poet and philosopher born to a wealthy family in Spain. He started writing as a child and as he grew older, his work turned to a longing for Jerusalem. He began his journey but it cannot be confirmed he ever arrived before his death.
That love is holy is a sobering thought. I am mindful of those I have loved–and lost–and still love deeply and miss greatly. There is comfort here, too, though, in that “painful joy.”
