The Night Before Thanksgiving
A short story by Sarah Orne Jewett, this story makes me consider how each of us may grow old, lose the ones we love, and consider new ways to spend the holiday–maybe quite unexpected ways!
Ms. Jewett, born in South Berwick, Maine, in 1849, published her first work at age 19 and was known as a “practitioner of American literary regionalism.” Writers focused on the setting, which was often rural, and brought in the flavor of the people, culture, customs, landscape, and history, among other characteristics. In the yard of the family home where she grew up were some elm trees. I like to think she pictured her own home as she wrote of Mother Robb, in her humble home.
