On Being an American by H.L. Mencken
No one ever fully agrees with the impressions, views, and behavior of others, and yet I can appreciate this piece by H. L. Mencken, the early twentieth scholar, journalist, and “Sage of Baltimore.” His views offer a laugh, or at least a chortle, maybe just a smile, and some perspective on today’s religious and political climate, nearly 100 years after it was first written.
