Excerpts from The Jungle by Upton Sinclair
Originally, I intended for this post to usher in Labor Day 2017, but audio equipment challenges and those blessed Indiana allergens, which shot my voice, have delayed me. Nonetheless, I thought a reminder of how conditions used to be in the meatpacking industry, in particular, but also working conditions in general, would serve us well. Upton Sinclair, pictured here, spent a number of weeks in the same role as our protagonist and much of his experience is what we read in The Jungle.
Given human nature, though, how much have conditions changed? Maybe we’re just better at “scattering here and there” those things we don’t want discovered.
