The Striding Place

 

American author Gertrude Atherton (1857-1948) wrote the following creepy tale, The Striding Place. A “strid” is described thusly,

“This striding place is called the ‘Strid,’

A name which it took of yore;

A thousand years hath it borne the name,

And it shall a thousand more.”
